The city of Calabash, North Carolina is a small, scenic fishing village on the border of NC and Little River. The east side of the city follows the Calabash River, which joins Little River's waterway as it comes back south. Located in Brunswick County like Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach, Calabash appeals to those who love a less developed coast, and you'll seldom find a high-rise condominium building or chain restaurant here. If you love to fish, there are several charter boats that go out from the river, to the ocean, and along the Intracoastal. In the summer, they offer sightseeing tours as well.

Calabash is famous for its special fried seafood, featuring popcorn shrimp, local oysters, and flounder in a light cornbread batter. Since the 1930's, people have come from all over North Carolina for this treat. Several of the restaurants such as Coleman's, the Seafood Hut, Ella's, and Beck's have been serving it all these years, and at one time were all owned by various members of the Beck family. The legendary comedian from the 30's, Jimmy Durante, always ended his shows with "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” The Seafood Hut has a signed photo on the wall of his visit that started it all, and most people agree that Lucy Coleman was "Mrs. Calabash".

At the southwestern side of the main road is an incorporated "town" called Carolina Shores. Like an island of land, it's surrounded by Calabash, but has its own sewer, trash collection, and rules. Homes in Carolina Shores range from expensive to very affordable manufactured homes, as do many of the communities in Calabash. It has a golf course and country club, and is a favorite place for retirees. In addition to the homes in Carolina Shores, you'll find a large condo complex, with mid-priced units that are very popular as vacation rental properties.

A few homes both older and newer can be found close to the waterfront amongst the restaurants, but the majority of the real estate in Calabash is more urban, all along and around Highway 179, up to Hwy 17, and bordering on Sunset Beach. There are many very affordable homes in this coastal town, and several very very exclusive waterfront developments just across the state line in Little River. One worth mentioning is Big Landing, which sits on the border of both, and directly on the Intracoastal Waterway. Also, one of the best golf courses in the Grand Strand, Glen Dornoch, is less than a mile south on Highway 17. If you're interested in a luxury townhome, Calabash Palms off Hwy 17 is popular.

The lifestyle of Calabash is laid back and quiet, with small boutique stores and businesses that roll up the carpets at 8 or 9 pm. You can charter a fishing boat at the river, or buy fresh shrimp and fish right off the boats. A short drive up Highway 17 will put you in North Myrtle Beach when you crave the bright lights and nightlife. Those who live here wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
